GDC08: Day 2 : "easy is shit"

The Moscone West building at night where the Game developers conference is held:GDC08 conference in the Moscone West Building

I started the day with the keynote from Nokia titled "Play with Anybody Everywhere - context, the new paradigm for gameplay". He had a couple of interesting statistics concerning the usage by the "mobile technology leaders". Voice is used 12% of the time. Wifi covers a third of the data. 52% is browsing. Browsing on the mobile has become a key experience. He also told that the map is very important as user interface and providing context. So, well done Google Maps ;-) . He shows the manhattan storymashup.org that was made by the Nokia Research center in 2006. It's a combination of webified storytelling and a photohunt combined!

Next talk was a keynote about casual games by Microsoft. The talk was very bad and I left it halfway.

After a skype session with the kids back at home and some work, I joined the casual game tutorial "Refining the casual game". First talk, again by Gabe Zicherman about "The new demographics of casual games". So who is the casual gamer? According to Gabe:

  • 50% female
  • 75% 35-60 year
  • 30% income> 30%
  • 40% college educated
  • 20% retired
Then I joined the talk "Casual games are dead" by Eric Zimmerman. The subtitle was "Long live causal games!". He quoted his uncle with : "easy is shit" hence the title of this blogpost.

In the afternoon, I first jumped in "The paradox of play: the challenge of measuring what game players learn" but left that panel after twenty minutes to go to "Iphone and beyond: a new hope for mobile gaming" by Tom Hubina (who's defenitly is a PC and not a mac). Here's some infoporn about the Iphone:
  • 4 million sold worldwide
  • 95% go online (source: AT&T keynote in Barcelona)
  • 0.17% browser share compared to other browsers combined 0.07% (Source: net applications)
  • Iphone search 50x up (Source: Google)
One of the drawback for making Iphone/touch games is the lack of sound in the browser. A list of games for the Iphone/touch is Apple Web App list.

Next talk was "Wolfquest" by David T. Schaller (eduweb). The subtitle is "Designing a serious game for an unserious audience". The game Wolfquest has been made with Unity 3D and is a wildlife simulation game. The vision is to build a real game, that is addictively fun, that has a realistic 3D world and novel gameplay. What struck me was that a big part of presentation was about "fantasy and reality", probably hardly readable in this picture of a slide:
Fantasy and reality"Striking Gold: How kids' Worlds took the crown" by Paul Vanover (Disney Online), Lane Merrifield (Club Penguin, now Disney), Jason Root (Nickelodeon) and Kyra Reppen (Neopets) (in same order as in the picture)
Panel about kids worldThis was a panel with the people from the "ketnetkicks" of the USA. There was a concensus that it was about "listening to the kids" and about participation in the conversation with them.

GDC'08 : Day 1

First, I went to the talk by Ralph Kostner in the "World in motion Summit" titles "Why Gamers should care about Virtual World". The talk had a new title "High Windows". I guess this talk is what they call "thought provoking" ? Next talk was by Peter Marx (Analog Protocol MTV). He said that 80% of the downloads of the client to install a virtual world never register on their server. Meaning that 80% of potential players have a problem with installation.
Then I listened to "The power of free to play" by Adrian Cook (adriancook@gmail.com) who has a blog : http://www.freetoplay.biz
His advice for games that want to be free was to be browser based (or having a small download) and to defere user registration as late a possible. He also said that the game "battlefield heroes" pushes the barrier on quality of free online games.

Next talk was by Gabe Zichermann (game@rmbr.com) of rmbr.com. He said that Ebay, Facebook and Yahoo Answers are in fact online games. He said that Facebook is the McSalad of games. You can play games on it but it's not known as a gameplatform, hence is socially more accepted to be on Facebook. Like the McSalad is the excuse for the mom to take the kids to a McDonald. He said the strong point of Facebook are:

  • Really easy : effortless, 2D, HTML
  • Real: tangible benefit in real life (McSalad)
  • Free
  • Fun: socially - propagated story
  • Status: the ultimate fireplace mantle
He quoted some research that 70% of teenager girls prefer 2D over 3D.

Then I went to "Videogames to build & retain TV audiance" in the Serious Games Summits. Swen Vincke from Larian Studios gave a nice presentation about Ketnetkick from the VRT, the Belgian broadcaster. Another example was about a fiction program of Discovery Channel Canada about a space trip to mars. The game they showed was Race to mars. Another game was about Virtual Heroes.

I guess it was the chairman of the session that made a Marshall McLuhan quote from his book "Hot & Cool" (a book as old as I am): "It's misleading to suppose there's any basic difference between education & entertainment. This distinction merely relieves people of the responsibility of looking onto the matter."

We finished the day with:
  • "Facebook and the new web of social gaming" by Nabeel Hyatt
  • "Multiverse: From the field" by Rafhael Cedeno
  • "Habbo's Huge Success" by Sulka Haro from sulake (see picture below)

San Francisco, the narnia for geeks ?

On the plane, my collegue remarked that a lot of new teenager movies are somehow about the interplay between the real and the fantasy world. Think about "The Chronicles of Narnia: The Lion, the Witch and the Wardrobe", "Arthur et les Minimoys", "The Spiderwick Chronicles", ... The funny thing that occured to me, is that, in a way, I was leaving the daily reality in Belgium and was heading to a geeky fantasy world where:

  • everybody has an iphone
  • Google provides free Wifi with decent coverage and bandwidth
  • Starbuck allows you to visit the Itunes Store
  • a 3D measuring system in the Levis Store scans you body and manufactures a ideally fitting Levis for you in the store
  • ....
It was time for some reality checking. I first went to the Levis store on Union Square. No 3D machine at all. Somebody in the store had to measure me in the old fashioned way.

On our first free day in San Francisco, we took the caltrain to Mountain View. The idea was to walk to the Googleplex and check out the Google Wifi service. When we stepped out of the caltrain, I found the Google signal. As we walked to the Googleplex, the signal strength was fluctuating. So using a ipod touch as a GPS is maybe a bit to far streched. I guess you really need an Iphone for that.

I also often visit a Starbucks for a Café Latte or so. In most Starbucks, a screen is showing what Itunes tracks they are playing. The idea is that if you're interested in the song, you can take out your iphone or ipod touch and buy the song. Unfortunatly, my ipod touch can not make a connection with the Itunes Store. A Starbucks logo shows up in the left bottom corner but a message appears that says "Can't make connection to the Itunes Store". I tried it in several Starbucks with no success. I even bought a Starbucks Card. You can deposit some money on the card upfront and use it for later purchases. When I asked to the barista if the card was necessary to go visit the Itunes Store online they didn't know what I was talking about. They knew I had to buy a T-mobile card to use the wifi. That was already something. I guess Starbucks baristas will need some training as Starbuck will become the media outlet in the near future. Read the interesting article "Starbucks Deal Brewed with AT&T Has Hints of Apple" to understand that.

Leaving for GDC 2008

Finally, less than a day before I leave to San francisco. Me and my collegue are the lucky bastards that can attend the conference about interesting complex software applications (aka games ;-) ) GDC 2008. I hope to bring news here about Sony's Playtv, about Spore, Ipod Touch in a Starbucks, Google's Wifi network and all other new hot trends. Stay tuned.

Blogger in Draft announces Blog list

Blogger in Draft , the beta version of Google's blog service Blogger, aanounces a new feature. They provide a page element that you can easily add to your blog with blog links. The nice thing is that you can import the links to the feeds you read with Google Reader and make a selection out of them.

Uploaded with plasq's Skitch!

What is even more nice, is that the page element is not Javascript, but static HTML. This means that bots can crawl your page!

Cast42 as gadget via Google Mashup Editor

A few months ago, I asked Google to join the group of people that have access to Google Mashup Editor. As soon as Google granted my access to the private beta, I played around a bit with the tool. Altough its possibilities are endless, I had no good idea for a mashup that I would want. Since I'm happy owner of an Ipod Touch, I started to think about a customized version of this blog especially for the Ipod Touch/Iphone. After some playing around, I was quickly able to make a simple gadget, that takes the atom feed of his blog and strips everything but the essential. To access the gadget, surf to http://castfortwo.googlemashups.com. To add the Google gadget to your personalized homepage, go to your homepage, click on "Add items", select "Add a feed or gadget" and enter the address of the gadget : http://castfortwo.googlemashups.com/gadget.xml. The gadget should now appear on your homepage:

What I hope to hear in Steve Jobs keynote

Rumours are running wild in anticipation of the keynote presentation of Steve Jobs tomorow. I hope that:

  • Will Wright takes stage to announce that Spore will be released for mac first. His showing up supports the claim from Steve that OSX takes gaming serious. I can brag for to months to my PC collegues about how good Spore is (isn't that priceless ;-))
  • A basic version for .Mac becomes free and is powered and fully interoperable with Google services. More iDisk space can be bought from Google or Amazon S3.
  • Iphone comes to Belgium.
  • Apple clarifies their bidding strategy together with Google on the 700 MHz spectrum. This is why 'something is in the air'.
  • OSX Leopard is updated with a functional ZFS filesystem from SUN. ZFS has already been open sourced for osx but is in beta.
  • Timemachine can be used over Wifi. Currently, backup synchronisation goes only over the USB or Ethernet wire. I hope to be able to connect a USB disk to the Apple Basestation Extreme and connect my macbook pro via Wifi.
  • Itunes Europe launches with rental movies from major studios.
  • OSX on AppleTV becomes open. We can prototype or own channel on it.
  • Google Maps becomes integrated in Ipod Touch.
Above list of predictions/wishes is unlikely to happen. More probable is that we will get Itunes rental movies restricted to the States only. (One of the few drawback living in Europe). We will get a small notebook with Flash drives and touch interface (I don't bother because I can't afford it anyway) and more details about the Iphone/Ipod Touch SDK will be announced (as announced already).

iGoogle on Ipod Touch

Recently, Google homepage iGoogle got an Iphone/Ipod Touch specific overhaul. It can be reached on http://www.google.com/ig/i. This is how it looks on my Ipod Touch:

Utility application to check disk utilisation on osx

As my harddisk of my macbook was getting full, I needed something to select what files I wanted to remove. Following the classical 80/20 rule, a small number of files take a lot of place. The trouble is to find them. On pc, I used SequoiaView. Luckily, programs that generate tree maps also exist for the mac. First, I tried Disk Inventory X, a GPL program. It generates the treemaps, but does it very slowly. I looked a bit further and found GrandPerspective (also free software). That tool performed like I was used from SequoiaView.

Updated Analytics script ga.js works with Google blogger

Google provided an updated script to call the new javascript ga.js to enable to track usage of html pages with Google Analytics.

<script type="text/javascript">
var gaJsHost = (("https:" == document.location.protocol) ? "https://
ssl." : "http://www.");
document.write(unescape("%3Cscript src='" + gaJsHost + "google-
analytics.com/ga.js' type='text/javascript'%3E%3C/script%3E"));
</script>
<script type="text/javascript">
var pageTracker = _gat._getTracker("UA-xxxx-xx");
pageTracker._initData();
pageTracker._trackPageview();
</script>

I injected above code in to the template of this blog and everyting is now working fine. If you want to try it, Andy wrote an how to.

New Google homepage in Ipod Touch in Belgium

just surf to http://www.google.com/m

In a previous post "No new Google homepage for Ipod Touch in Belgium yet" I remarked that when entering the URL http://www.google.com in mobile Safari, the browser is redirected to the classic Google homepage with the URL http://www.google.be/m. So Ipod Touch users in Belgium can not try the new integrated that Google announced. However, if you type in http://www.google.com/m in Belgium on the Iphone or Ipod Touch you reach the new Google interface on the Ipod/Itouch.

New Analytics script not accepted by Blogger

Google asks to update the Google Analytics script to:

<script type=”text/javascript”>
var gaJsHost = (("https:" == document.location.protocol) ? " https://ssl." : "http://www.");
document.write("\<script src='" + gaJsHost + " google-analytics.com/ga.js' type='text/javascript'>\<\/script>" );

var pageTracker = _gat._getTracker(“UA-xxxxxx-x”);
pageTracker._initData();
pageTracker._trackVisit();
</script>

When entering this in to the Blogger HTML template, I get an error:

Open quote is expected for attribute "{1}" associated with an element type "type".

If you don't need the secure http access, you can simplify the script to:

<script src='http://www.google-analytics.com/ga.js' type='text/javascript'>
</script>
<script type='text/javascript'>
var pageTracker = _gat._getTracker("UA-xxxxxxx-x"); pageTracker._initData(); pageTracker._trackPageview(); </script>

Please only use the above code if you urgently want to test the new script. It might be wise to wait until the Google engineers have ironed out this issue if you do not want to put your huge analytics income at risk ;-)

No new Google homepage for Ipod Touch in Belgium yet

Google announced a new Google home page for the Iphone. Here are screenshots how the new homepage looks on the Iphone. However, if you surf to http://www.google.com in Belgium on a Ipod Touch, you still get the classical homepage:

It looks that because the Apple Iphone is still not available in Belgium, Ipod touch owners have to wait. I know that Wifi is far from ubiquitous in Belgium, so large pratical value is not to be expected. Still I'm eager how the new Google homepage is experienced. I already value a lot the Gmail, Google Reader and Google Calendar are refitted for the Ipod Touch.

First Itunes movie not in Itunes Belgium Store

Today Itunes exclusively launches its first feature film called Purple Violet. This could be significant because new business models that cut out elements in the chain often shake up the industry. Unfortunatly, the movie Purple Violet is only available in the US store:

The Itunes store does speak Dutch but a Belgium store is not there yet. To make matters worse, I still have to select Itunes Belgique :

I hope Itunes België will become available soon. If they wait to long it might be that we need an Itunes Vlaanderen ;-) .

Web pages especially for Iphone/Ipod Touch

I was wondering how the embed a media file into HTML for the mobile Safari browser on Apple's Iphone or Ipod Touch. Therefore, I looked up how others are doing it and what's in the documentation Apple:

  1. BBC has made a portal to its podcasts : http://www.bbc.co.uk/radio/podcasts/directory/ip/ or you can just go to bbc.co.uk/podcasts.

    The code used to embed the mp3 podcasts is:

    <embed width="100%" height="22" enablejavascript="true" controller="false" autostart="false" pluginspage="www.apple.com/quicktime/download" src="http://downloads.bbc.co.uk/podcasts/northernireland/nimusic/nimusic__20071112-2215.mp3"/>

    More info on BBC podcast portal.

  2. Also Apple makes their trailers available in an Ipod Touch / Iphone friendly way. The URL is http://www.apple.com/trailers/iphone/
    Here's the HTML code that Apple uses to embed the Beowulf movie:

    <embed src="http://movies.apple.com/trailers/iphone/images/greenband_320x133.png" href="http://movies.apple.com/movies/paramount/beowulf/beowulf-fte_i320.m4v"
    target="myself" width="320" height="133"
    controller="false"
    autoplay="false"
    scale="1" cache="true" type="video/quicktime" pluginspage="http://www.apple.com/quicktime/download/">

    Ars Technica has some screenshots of Apple trailers on the Iphone.
  3. The code proposed by Apple looks like this:

    <script src="AC_QuickTime.js" language="JavaScript" type="text/javascript"></script>
    QT_WriteOBJECT_XHTML('http://d2.mikseri.net/m/30a/30007249206/Frozen%20Silence%20-%20Cherish.mp3', '32', '16', '',
    'autoplay', 'false',
    'emb#bgcolor', 'black',
    'cache','false',
    'align', 'top');

    The URL is to a piece of music of the album "Frozen Silence" by Matti Paalanen.

  4. Also the indie site http://ourstage.com has Iphone specific pages according to Techcrunch. But when surfing to that page on my Ipod Touch i get no specific content.

To get those HTML codes, go to about:config in Firefox and set the value of general.useragent.extra.firefox from something like 'Firefox/2.0.0.9' to 'Useragent "Mozilla/5.0 (iPod; U; CPU like Mac OS X; en) AppleWebKit/420.1 (KHTML,like Gecko) Version/3.0 Mobile/3A100a Safari/419.3' and then surf to the URL for ipod touch or iphone and inspect the page source.

Impression of Google's Android UI on Ipod Touch

I downloaded Engadget visual tour of Android's UI in Iphoto, cutted out the screens and synced them on my Ipod Touch. Voila, a visual impression of Google Android UI on Apple Ipod Touch:

Ipod Touch Firmware 1.1.2 also in ITunes Belgium

Already a few days announced, the new firmware for Apple's Iphone and Ipod Touch is available trough Itunes. Also in Itunes België :

The main new feature is that you can edit the calendar and the contacts with the Ipod Touch. The new update is a whopping 157 megabyte big, so it took 10 minutes to download via my DSL line. Installation went smooth. I'm reconsidering installing Spanning Sync
to synchronize my Google Calendar and Gmail contacts with Apple's Ical and contactbook. Spanning sync is free for the first 15 days.

Peter Forret has decided on the organisation of Barcamp Brussels. Barcamp #4 will be on the 1st of december 2007 near Brussels North railway station (at mVillage).
I have subscribed already.
